Biofilm, periprosthetic joint infection, and the future of antibiotics in surgery

The first issue is devoted to one subject. Bacteria on implant surfaces form biofilm, in which they tolerate antibiotic concentrations far above those attainable by systemic therapy. Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is the clinical consequence, and its management remains as much surgical as medical. The invited papers cover biofilm biology, the diagnosis and treatment of PJI, and where antibiotic therapy in surgery is heading.

Aims and scope

Permease publishes short, edited papers that carry selected new findings from research toward clinical practice.

A permease is a membrane transport protein. It carries a specific substrate across a membrane that the substrate cannot cross on its own. The journal takes its name from this function: most research findings never cross into practice, and Permease exists to carry a selected few of them across.

Permease is published open access by New Age Publishing. ISSN registration is in progress. Applications for indexing will follow the first issue.

Editorial board

Permease has two managing editors. Jakob Adolf, MD (University of Zurich), works in orthopaedics and translational pharmacology. His background includes the Weizmann Institute of Science, the Charité in Berlin, the ENDO-Klinik in Hamburg, and Heidelberg University. Georgi Enev, MD (University Hospital of Zurich), studied medicine at the Medical University of Varna and works in the hospital's consultation service.

The editorial board is appointed anew for each issue and matched to its subject, so that manuscripts are assessed by people who work in the field the issue covers. The board of Volume 1 will be announced.

For authors

Permease does not accept unsolicited submissions. Contributions are by invitation of the editors.

An invited paper presents a single finding: what was shown, in what population or model, and what it may change in practice. Length and format requirements are sent with the invitation.

Authors retain copyright. Conflicts of interest are declared at submission.

Editorial policies

Peer review

Papers are invited by the managing editors. Each manuscript is assessed by the managing editors and by the editorial board of the issue, then revised with the authors before acceptance. Where further expertise is needed, an external reviewer is consulted. A manuscript authored by one of the managing editors is handled by the other. Invitation does not guarantee acceptance.

Open access and licensing

All articles are free to read on publication. Authors retain copyright and license their work under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence (CC BY 4.0). The journal charges no submission or publication fees. Publication costs are borne by the publisher.

Publication ethics

The journal follows the guidance of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). Authors, editors, and reviewers declare their conflicts of interest. Reports of research on humans must state ethics-committee approval and informed consent. Reports of animal research must state regulatory approval. Errors are corrected by a published correction notice. Articles that prove unreliable are retracted and marked as such.

Archiving

Published articles will be deposited with a long-term digital preservation service. Arrangements will be announced together with the ISSN.

Permease is an open-access journal of New Age Publishing. It appears once a year. Each article receives a DOI on publication. ISSN registration is in progress. The journal is not yet indexed. Applications for indexing will follow the first issue, and changes in status will be announced on this page.
